German born photographer Herbert List (1903-1975) was perhaps best known for his black and white photography of ancient ruins, landscape, sculptures, and males nudes in Greece and Italy. Alongside this work sits List's portraits of friends and contemporaries like: Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, Jean Cocteau, Jean Arp and Georges Braque; and experimental still life imagery, influenced by the Surrealist and Bauhaus movements.

List briefly worked as a fashion photographer in Paris and London for publications such as Harper's Bazaar, Vogue and Life, and has been credited as greatly influencing the work of photographers such as Herb Ritts.
